Pine Island Chapel

A six-acre plot of land on West Q Avenue in Texas Township is the new home of the Pine Island Chapel, a 1,900-square-foot gathering space that members will use for worship services and community meetings.

The chapel is owned by First Presbyterian of Kalamazoo, which merged with Pine Island Church of Texas Township in 2019.

The Bodwé team provided design drawings for the new chapel, which will hold up to 90 people. Project designs included support spaces for the chapel, including a new entry, kitchenette, storage room, mechanical room, restrooms, and a brushed concrete patio.

Deliverables included schematic designs and construction documents. The team met with the owner and the design-build contractor to finalize the site plan, floor plan, building elevations, and interior and exterior building materials. The team provided design direction regarding mechanical, electrical, and plumbing requirements. Additional services including code compliance, township ordinance coordination, and construction administration review of the structural system were also provided.

The project started during 2020 and went through several budgetary, supply chain, and zoning challenges before finally acquiring its Certificate of Occupancy in early 2025. The first formal event was an Easter vigil on April 19, 2025.

Members of both congregations will enjoy this secondary location, which is suited for small worship services with a more casual and meditative approach. The church community anticipates many happy weddings, family reunions, and other gatherings to be held in the new chapel.
