WBK was selected by the McHenry County Division of Transportation to provide Phase I and Phase II engineering services for the replacement of the Franklinville Road bridge over Franklinville Creek. The project area contained habitat in which threatened or endangered species of fish and mussel are known to exist, requiring Resource Management involvement.
The existing structure had a span length of 38’ and supported 2-12’ traffic lanes. Built in 1954, the existing steel multi beam girder structure was supported by pile bent closed abutments.
As part of Phase I, WBK hydrologically modeled the 10-square-mile watershed (HEC-HMS) to determine design storm discharges for the proposed structure. The hydrologic model was calibrated to three historic storm events using gage data and referenced high water marks.
As a result of the preliminary design studies, the preferred design alternative included the relocation of Franklinville Creek as part of the proposed improvements. This alternative required additional consultation with the Army Corps of Engineers, as well as with the McHenry County Planning and Development Department.
Construction was completed in 2016 and WBK continues to perform maintenance and monitoring.
